Im April kaufte ich mir das Asus L3500D Notebook, ausgestattet mit einem Mobile Athlon XP 2000 Prozessor, SiS 740 Chipsatz, 40G Platte mit ultra DMA 100 Unterstützung, Combo DVD-CDRW Laufwerk, Floppy, und eine ganze Menge Schnittstellen. Siehe auch das lspci Listing. Das Notebook kam ohne Betriebssystem, für MS-Windows habe ich weder eine Verwendung noch Sympathie ...
Zur technischen Qualität des Notebooks kann ich nichts sagen, da mir Vergleiche fehlen. Allerdings bin ich bisher sehr damit zufrieden.
Die Zufriedenheit mit dem Notebook bezieht sich nicht auf das ziemlich armselige Heftchen, das mit dem Notebook kam. Beim Einschalten des Notebooks wird nicht (oder zu kurz) angezeigt, wie man ins BIOS kommt. Der Blick in die Anleitung -- siehe obiger Kommentar dazu -- hilft natürlich auch nicht weiter, die entsprechende Passage enthält einen Druckfehler, der es nicht ermöglicht zu erraten, was man nun drücken soll. Experimentieren ergab, dass die F2-Taste die Lösung ist. Das ist wichtig zu wissen, denn um von CD zu booten, musste man bei mir erst mal die Bootreihenfolge ändern.
Ein erster Test mit Knoppix 3.1 zeigte, dass die wichtigsten Sachen funktionieren würden. Ein Versuch mit SuSE 8.1 sah so aus, als ob die Installation einige Handarbeit erfordern würde. Da SuSE 8.2 noch nicht raus war, gab ich Mandrake 9.1 einen Versuch. Sah alles ganz gut aus, nur das Gebläse lief alle paar Minuten lautstark an. Ich ging nicht auf Ursachensuche, sondern wartete noch die paar Tage auf SuSE 8.2.
Gleich vorweg, die Dinge, die mir am wichtigsten sind, funktionierten nach einer einfachen Installation und Konfiguration mit Yast2 schnell und ohne manuelles Rumbasteln. Die einzige Ausnahme war der Betrieb des X-Servers, siehe unten. Das oben erwähnte Problem mit dem Gebläse unter Mandrake tritt nicht auf. Es läuft nur gelegentlich an, und auch dann nicht besonders laut. Allerdings scheint der Akku beim Laden so viel Hitze zu produzieren, dass es dann öfter angeht.
Das folgende ist vielleicht nur von beschränktem Nutzen, da ich viele der technischen Möglichkeiten meines Notebooks bisher nicht probiert habe.
Hier die wichtigsten Punkte der Installation, soweit ich mich noch erinnern kann.SaX2 verwendet nach der korrekten Hardware-Erkennung den SIS Treiber. Nach einem Neustart des X-Servers blieb bei mir alles schwarz. Auch die Textkonsole war davon betroffen, auch sie war schwarz. Dieser Effekt blieb auch bei einem Neustart, sobald der X-Server startete. Im log-File des X-Servers konnte ich allerdings keine Fehlermeldungen finden. Die Hardware war dabei übrigens nie eingefroren, ich konnte mich stets auf einer Textkonsole blind als root einloggen und den Rechner runterfahren.
Booten mit Knoppix und ein Blick in die von Knoppix erzeugte XF86Config-4 Datei gab mir Hinweise, wie ich XF86Config editieren kann, um ein funktionierendes X zu erhalten. Knoppix verwendet statt des sis Treibers den fbdev Treiber. Mit den entsprechenden Änderungen konnte ich X starten. Dann verwendete ich Sax2 zur erneuten Konfiguration, allerdings mit der Änderung, dass nicht der empfohlene sis Treiber, sondern der vesa Treiber verwendet wird. Siehe XF86Config für vesa für eine Beispieldatei (abzulegen in /etc/X11/XF86Config).
Mittlerweile habe ich den aktuellen sis Treiber für X von der Homepage http://www.winischhofer.net/ des Treiberautors Thomas Winischhofer heruntergeladen und probiert, damit funktioniert alles. Auch hierfür eine, sicher sehr unprofesionelle, XF86Config Datei.
Der SIS Treiber von Winischhofer unterstützt keine 3D Harwarebeschleunigung, und die fbdev und vesa Treiber natürlich auch nicht. Auf Tuxracer oder sowas muss man also verzichten ...
VGA-Ausgang und Viedeoausgang habe ich nicht probiert.
Wird, wenn ich mich recht entsinne, wurde sie von SaX2 korrekt installiert. Auf jeden Fall funktioniert sie, wenn in XF86Config die ensprechende Passage

Die mitgelieferte optische USB-Maus wird korrekt installiert, sogar das Rädchen funktioniert.
Auch das wird korrekt installiert. Habe es bei mir allerdings deaktiviert, da ich stets die Maus verwende. Siehe die XF86Config Datei (Abschnitte "InputDevice" und "ServerLayout") für eine mögliche Konfiguration.
Lesen und Brennen von CDs funktionieren ohne zusätzliche Konfigurationsschritte. Auch DVDs werden gelesen, und SuSE 8.2 bootet von der DVD.
Funktioniert natürlich auch ohne weitere Konfiguration.
Wird korrekt erkannt und konfiguriert. Auch das interne Mikrofon funktioniert. Externe Lautsprecher und Mikrofone funktionieren ebenso.
Infrarot funktioniert. Dazu muss man vorher im Bios die Infrarotschnittstelle aktivieren, und danach als root mit ``rcirda start'' die Kommunikation starten. Standardmässig ist das wegen des Stromverbrauchs abgeschaltet. Der schnelle Modus FIR wird anscheinend nicht ohne weiteres von Linux unterstützt. Mehr dazu siehe auf der Tuxmobil-HOWTO Seite.

Karte wird korrekt erkannt. Hostname, IP-Nummer, nameserver, router etc. mittels YAST2 eintragen, und schon klappt das LAN.
Da ich ein externes Modem besitze, welches ich über die serielle Schnittstelle benutze, habe ich mich nicht näher mit dem internen Modem befasst. Allerdings schrieb mir Daniel John (dj@daniel-john.de): ``Das Modem läuft mit dem Treiber slmdm-2.7.10.tar.gz (Download auf http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/ ). Mit den Informationen in der README-Datei sollte der Treiber problemlos zu installieren sein''.
Drucker (HP Lasterjet2) und Scanner (UMAX Astra 2000P mit sanebackend von sourceforge) funktionieren einwandfrei.
USB-Maus und Drucker (hp deskjet 5550) funktionieren problemlos.
Gemäss Anleitung und BIOS gibt es keine APM-Unterstützung. Die ACPI-Unterstützung in Linux ist wohl noch kaum vorhanden. Wenn ich den Kernel mit ACPI-Unterstützung verwende, kann ich den Akkustand, Temperatur und sowas mit acpi -V bekommen. (Dazu müssen die entsprechenden Module battery, processor, ac und thermal geladen werden.)
ABER! - Die ACPI-Unterstützung deaktiviert die Funktionstasten. Das stört mich besonders bei den Helligkeitstasten. Deshalb starte ich oft auch mit der Kerneloption acpi=off.
Mit SuSE 8.2 lässt sich die CPU-Geschwindigkeit nicht regeln. Allerdings hat das Notebook eine Besonderheit: Schaltet man es ohne Netzanschluss an, so halbiert das BIOS die Frequenz. Das lässt sich anscheinend dann im laufenden Betrieb mit dem SuSE 2.20 Kernel nicht mehr rückgängig machen.
