Abstract:

In smectic liquid crystals, rod-like molecules tend to align parallel to each other along a common director n and form parallel layers with equal thickness of the order of a few nm. The layers present an orientation that could jump across the material, see Lacaze experiment.

In this talk, we discuss some preliminary results towards the mathematical analysis of defect patterns in thin film of smectic A phases.

These preliminary results refer to the works by Giacomo Canevari, Università Degli Studi Di Verona (Verona, Italy) and John M. Ball, Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, UK) and University of Oxford (UK).
