From 1D Random Motion to a Novel Mechanical Model for Chemical Exchange

Chemical exchange models the transfer, of for example a nucleus, between two molecular environments.
The dynamics of the resulting magnetization vectors of the exchanging sites, as well as the structure
of the obtained NMR spectra are known for roughly 40 years. However these dynamics are rather
heuristic and a satisfying underlying picture is still missing. We develop an intuitive mechanical model
describing the inner workings of chemical exchange based on the asymmetric telegraph process (a 1D
random motion with two velocities and two alternating intensities, which was recently solved by López
and Ratanov) which reproduces the known magnetization dynamics as desired.
