Recent Trends in Nonlinear and Nonsmooth Optimization

Welcome to the webpage for the workshop Recent Trends in Nonlinear and Nonsmooth Optimization, which will take place at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Würzburg, December 11–12, 2025, on the occasion of Christian Kanzow’s 60th birthday.

The workshop features 15 distinguished speakers from Christian Kanzow’s wide network of collaborators. Its aim is to highlight recent advances in areas closely connected to his significant scientific contributions, in particular, in the fields of nonlinear and nonsmooth optimization.

Topics include theory and algorithms for various classes of nonlinear optimization problems, equilibrium problems, bilevel programming, optimization with PDE constraints, and modern learning-based approaches. This broad spectrum reflects the depth, breadth and influence of Christian Kanzow’s work in optimization, spanning both the development of mathematical theory and the design of numerical methods.

The workshop will provide a forum for experts to present new ideas, exchange perspectives, and celebrate Christian Kanzow’s impact on the field of optimization.
