The Double Degree Program in Mathematics is a unique opportunity to study in two countries and earn a Master’s degree awarded by two leading international universities: the University of Calabria and the University of Würzburg. You will experience the best of both academic worlds, gaining access to a broader and richer range of courses than you would at a single institution.

Along the way, you will sharpen your language skills, immerse yourself in different cultures, and grow personally and academically. With joint supervision and exposure to vibrant research environments at both universities, you will be well prepared for further studies or an international career in mathematics and beyond.

Last but not least, you will graduate with a degree that reflects a truly joint and integrated educational path between our two institutions: a shared academic achievement that adds significant value to your future career prospects.

To be eligible for the Double Degree Program, students must have completed the first cycle of studies (equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, totaling at least 180ECTS credits). As general requirements:

  • A completed Bachelor's degree (First Level Degree) in Mathematics or a closely related field.
  • English language proficiency level B2.
  • Academic competencies in core mathematical areas from previous studies.
  • Be regularly enrolled in the Master's Degree Programme in Mathematics at UniCal.

Students from the University of Calabria shall apply for admission to the Mathematics International Master’s programme at the University of Würzburg through WueStudy, the official application and enrollment portal.

The process is fully online and involves registering on the platform and submitting the required documents. A step-by-step guide, including screenshots and explanations, is available in the PDF below.

When applying, please prepare the following documents:

  • Bachelor’s degree certificate, with a German or English translation
  • Transcript of records showing completed modules, ECTS credits, and grades (with translation if needed)
  • Overview of ECTS credits in mathematical subjects (e.g. Analysis, Algebra, Geometry, Differential Equations, etc.)
  • A document attesting sufficient English skills (for instance, of level B2 or higher)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) with details of your academic background

If your application is successful, you will receive a Letter of Admission containing further information on how to complete your enrolment at the University.  There are no tuition fees for students from the University of Calabria at the University of Würzburg. However, as an exchange student, you will be required to pay a small enrolment fee, which includes a public transportation ticket valid for the entire semester.

Würzburg is a beautiful and historic city, known for its architecture, vineyards, and lively student atmosphere. It is an ideal place to live and study. As a popular university city, however, student accommodation is in high demand, especially at the start of the semester. We strongly recommend that you begin your housing search as early as possible to secure a place in one of the student dormitories or in private housing.

Application deadlines

  • June 15 for the Winter Semester
  • January 15 for the Summer Semester

All students in Germany are required by law to have valid health insurance in order to enroll at a university. If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), present it to a German public health insurance provider (such as AOK, TK, or Barmer). They will verify your coverage and will send an electronic confirmation directly to the University of Würzburg. Enrollment is only possible once this electronic confirmation has been received.

Students with the University of Calabria as their home university will spend at least one semester—semester 3 and/or 4—at the University of Würzburg. During their stay, they must acquire a minimum of 30 ECTS credits by attending courses offered at Würzburg.

To be eligible for the mobility, students must complete at least 40 ECTS credits at UniCal before the start of their semester abroad.

The current list of available courses for Winter Semester 2025/26 is available here:  Course Catalogue WS 2025/26 – Mathematics Master Programmes

When browsing the catalogue, students should make sure to select the section titled “Mathematics Master Programmes”. All lectures, seminars, and research groups listed under this section are suitable for students in the double degree program. Some initial information concerning the courses can be found at the following catalogue

The table below outlines an example study plan for students enrolled at the University of Calabria (UniCal) participating in the Double Degree programme in Mathematics with the University of Würzburg (JMU). In this example, the student chooses to spend only the third semester at JMU, while completing the rest of the programme at UniCal.

The modules listed are only a suggestion and may be adjusted in consultation with academic advisors at both institutions, depending on individual interests and the availability of courses within the respective Master’s programmes.

The Master’s Thesis represents the final major examination component of the joint Master's degree program between the University of Würzburg and the University of Calabria. Through this written thesis, the student is expected to demonstrate the ability to address a (mathematical) problem in a scientifically rigorous manner within a specified time frame.

The thesis is supervised by an authorized academic advisor at each university, in accordance with local regulations. Students may propose a preferred supervisor, but an official supervisor must be formally appointed at both institutions, in compliance with their respective internal rules.

The thesis will be evaluated separately by both universities, following their own grading procedures and systems.

  • The thesis carries 30 ECTS credits at the University of Würzburg,
  • and 21 ECTS credits at the University of Calabria.

Submission, evaluation, and registration of the thesis will take place at both institutions, according to their respective rules and procedures. The results will be fully recognized by both universities as part of the double degree program.

At the University of Würzburg, the thesis can be started at any time. However, students are strongly advised to begin no later than the start of their 6th semester, to make full use of the six-month writing period and to submit the thesis before the start of the 7th semester. With the beginning of the 7th semester, the program is considered failed for the first time if the thesis has not been submitted.

The thesis topic is usually agreed upon with a faculty member based on the student's mathematical interests (see the overview of the research groups in the Department of Mathematics). Once the topic and supervisor are confirmed, the required form must be completed and submitted to the Mathematics Department (Mathematik Ost, Room 00.016, Ms. Schmid). The official start and submission dates (six months from the date of assignment) will then be formally recorded.

Extensions of the submission deadline are only possible in well-justified exceptional cases (e.g. certified illness) and require approval from the examination board in consultation with the supervisor.

Note: No final colloquium (Kolloquium) is required for the thesis at the University of Würzburg.
